Abstract

Cartas familiares by Juan Andrés to his brother include the narration of the visit to the city of Naples and its surroundings, the description of the artistic-cultural heritage of the city, and, likewise, the abbe’s considerations about the social life of the Neapolitans and their cultural models. The analysis of these texts, therefore, allows us to find out one of the most accredited points of view that spread in 18th century Spain about Naples. More specifically, object of study are the discursive strategies used in the Cartas, based on the theoretical-methodological postulates of the analysis of the argumentation, a modality that presents a close interrelation with the narrative and the description modalities. These strategies make it possible to provide the recipient of the text with a certain image of the Parthenopean city, its artistic-cultural heritage, and its inhabitants, while the narrator builds his self-image in the discourse.
