Alfonso Reyes’s and Pedro Salinas’s rewriting of the Cantar de Mio Cid: two examples of intralinguistic diachronic translation

Abstract

The work analyses the main aspects of Alfonso Reyes’s and Pedro Salinas’s translations into modern Spanish of the Cantar de Mio Cid (1919 and 1926, respectively). After the analysis of the prefaces, in which the translators show the theoretical basis of their own works, the focus will be laid on the profound differences existing between the two translations, with a special attention on the different ways of translating the particular use of the verb, which characterizes the Cantar.
