An analysis, with examples of poetry from the spanish golden age, of the moral recommendation of dampening or purifying the passions through platonic love, ciceronian amicitia and the principles of stoical ataraxia, which predominate in a broad sector of poetry from counter-reformist spain. the suggestion of dampening emotions, calming the spirit and subduing desire means a reversal of the scholastic philosophy of the passions.
