Abstract

Onomastics in Diálogo de las cosas acaecidas en Roma is the premise for an innovative analysis of Lactantius Firmianus’s and his works’ influence on Alfonso de Valdés’s personality and first dialogue. A whole range of thematic, argumentative, and stylistic coincidences between the 1527 text and the Latin polemicist’s works is noted and studied to specify the modalities of the dialogue between Latancio and the Archdeacon of El Viso. The resolutely transtextual perspective helps understand Valdés’s Castilian prose and situate him in the humanism of his time.
